English uses a lot of verbs with a preposition (phrasal verbs) especially in informal spoken English. There are thousands of them to learn!! Yipee!

So here is one which is useful when you have a friend coming over to London to stay with you……

(to) put someone up – to offer someone a room in your house for the night free of charge.

Jane: I’m coming over to Paris and I’m looking for a hotel. Could you suggest somewhere to stay?

Blandine: Don’t worry about a hotel. I can put you up. Let me know when you are coming.
